I have a 9 week minature pinscher and last night was he was without his sisters for the first time. He was fine to lay in his crate with his but whines when I close the door and he is alone. Any suggestions? This is my first time raising a puppy (or dog for that matter).

I went through the same thing with my puppy who is now 1 1/2 old lab mixed with red bone coon hound. They will have to grow out of it in a week or so. Dont coddle them and baby them. They have to learn that you cant always bee around at certain times of the day. Whats gonna happen when u go to work? grocery store? give him a week or so to grow out of it. To add comfort to him leave in the crate a piece of your already worn clothing so he can smell your scent to know that mommy is not far away. Dont keep opening the door because the whining will never ceasehe will keep expecting u to open it . trust me he will soon in a week or a little more stop

Most people on here have the right idea!

Put a stuffed animal in there about the size of the puppies mother or if it was already away from it's mother by the time you got it, have the stuffed animal be about the size of the litter mates. Place a ticking clock underneath the stuffed animal so it sounds like the heart beat! Also because it's a small breed with short hair and it has been used to sleeping in puppy piles for the last couple of weeks, do put a heating pad in there, on low with at least a towel or blanket over it!

Don't worry, it will get better. Probably only a few more days and the puppy will be used to the new arrangements and settle down. Just make sure to also keep the puppy on a schedule, that will also make it easier for it!

Have fun and good luck!

I have a new baby male black lab puppy and I had the same problem. Put a warm baby blanket on the bottom of the crate(Can get at Wal-Mart for a dollar.), the put a stuffed animal in the corner away for the crates door(preferably a dog that looks like his sisters), put in at least one toy he can chew on or play with(in case he wakes up in the middle of the night, he won't wake you up),then put him in and cover him up with another baby blanket. You can also put a ticking clock in the other corner. Dogs like it when it is "cramped" because it fells like all their brothers and sisters around them. GOOD LUCK with your problem and I hope you have a lot of Fun!!!

I agree with the stuffed animal answer! It will give him something to cuddle up with in the crate. I would also go back to where you got him and take a blanket or towel with you. Rub Mom and any siblings still there with it and rub them GOOD. Make sure their scent is on every inch of the article. This will give your dog a familiar and comforting scent as well and something to cuddle with. Most likely this will stop the whining, he's having separation anxiety. Good luck!

As the forum members said if you can put a ticking clock and a warm water bottle wrapped in `a shirt or something you have worn this gives it a sense of not being alone. As you said he was just seperated from his sisters.

I have had the same problem before. if it is a small crate put it next to your bed or even have him sleep with you. When puooies sleep together they are usually sleeping ON TOP of eachother for warmth. Your pup my be cold....

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PUPPY!!!

Put a stuffed animal in with him...he misses having other "bodies" around him to cuddle up to. For our pup, I had my daughter sleep with a towel on her pillow (you can do this w/anything..shirt, stuffed toy...etc)for a day or 2 to get her scent on it, and then put it in with him...he seemed to be calmer at night and appeared to feel more secure. That was about 4-5 months ago and he STILL drags that ol'thing around! It's become his "security blanket"!! (tooooooo cute!)

Put a ticking clock in there for the sound. He needs to hear something. He is used to other doggies breathing and making sounds.
