I was involved in a wreck in which the other party was at fault for rear ending me.
My car received little damage, (fender bent, scratched paint and the tailpipe was pushed in, etc.

I have been in a wreck before which caused major body damage, but I overlooked the hidden mechanical damage such as alignment problems, ruined shocks, etc.
This time I'm going to pursue getting the mechanical part looked at very well.
My question is whether insurance adjusters look for this type of damage and if not, would it be wise to get several estimates for repair or just wait to see if the adjuster adds this to the claim first?

Adjusters can only write what they see when they're standing there with the car intact. You do not need other estimates. The adjuster issues payment based off the insurance company's estimate, and once the car is put in the shop if other damage is found they contact the adjuster who will write a supplemental estimate if there is no question it's related damage. Pretty painless.

Get an estimate done for the additional damages. You should wait until the other insurance company comes out to look at your car, at which time you can mention those additional damages. However, they usually tell you get an estimate done and have your attorney submit it to the insurance company. If you don't have a lawyer, then submit it yourself. They will pay what they believe is necessary as long as you don't wait to long to submit it.

I just had an accident which i was rearended while sitting at a red light, by a woman yapping on her cell phone, she hit me going 50 mph. It totalled my van. When it was at the body shop, i asked if mechanical items were covered, and they told me no. only suspension and body damage. So depending on the severity of the crash. let them look it over. They are professionals, have done this many, many times. They will fix what has been damaged as a result of the accident.

You should check in with your insurance company, and let them know someone else hit you. They can recommend you to their approved body shop for an appraisal. You should DEFINITELY have at least one appraisal by a firm YOU choose. I tend to recommend using the body shop at the dealership that sold you the car, or would have if you bought it new. They'll know the car better.

I've been hit 3 times in 3 years outside Washington D.C. I'm practically on a first-name basis with my body shop.

Get a few estimates and tell them what you think and what to look for.

Do not let anyone rush you! Make sure you tell the adjuster your concerns, and insist that they take them into consideration.
