Normally I would just confront the person. But because this is work and I dont' want to make the enviroment uncomfortable for either of us and can't just come right out and ask him. I don't want to ask other people either cuz I dont' want them in my buisness.

Maybe you could try doing a general office questionaire for everyone there. Send round a form asking everyone's birthday and if they are single or married and how many children they have. Even if you say it's for a big office party you are planning. If that doesn't sound appropriate then maybe you could do something similar along those lines...?

Well, if they don't have a ring on their finger assume they are single, you can find out if you ask them out or whatever. It's not that embarassing, is it? Or just give it time and you may accidentally stumble on the info.

if u are interested in dating that person at work then the best way to know whether he is single or married is to get friendly first.in this way you get two different ways to know whether he is single or not.the 1st way is to indirectly ask him(it becomes easier to ask him after he gets familiar with you).example: "so what do you do at weekends?go out with your girlfriend or wife for a long drive?"
the 2nd way to know is by offering him to go out with you at some party at some odd time when he is possibily at home,say in the afternoon on a holiday.if he keeps on refusing everytime you ask him,then it means that he either is not interested or cannot go out hiding from his wife/girlfriend.
you have to be patient and observant if you are seriously interested.

I'd ask questions like
What did you do on the weekend?
What are you up to tonight?
My house mates/parents drive me crazy sometimes. Do you live with house mates?
Stuff like that. Eventually he might say something like "my wife and I..." or "my girlfriend and I...". Then you'll have your answer. If not chances are he might be single.

Start a general conversation first, maybe with some other co-workers around as well.....it might just come up in the conversation. If not, then just ask him.
