I suspect some of the original (Jewish) believers would consider "Christ", "Jesus", or any other Greek or Hellenized names for him to be an insult of sorts.
But then again, to eat or drink with Gentiles was an insult to many Jews of the time - which Joshua (Jesus) and Saul (Paul) were trying to change - though I suppose the "sinners" Joshua ate with could've all been Jews.
I suppose my point is that if someone uses the Greek "Christ" for "messiah", substituting it with an X only takes that a little further. Christians have been calling him names for 2000 years - may as well make another one.

I used it in a question because I didn't have enough letters left to ask the question. I have seen Xtian on the site many times. No doubt I will be report by an uptight Christian again (sigh). By the way, Merry Xmas to all. 31 shopping days left.

I'm a Christian and that abbreviation doesn't insult me. The X (Chi) in ancient Greek manuscripts was sometimes used to abbreviate Christ, and the theta was used to abbreviate God. Other abbreviations were used as well...to save space on the skins or vellum.

I consider it an insult because English- speaking Christians never use that for a respectful abbreviation of "Christ." We are not Greek; the people who most use that also are the ones using Xmas for Christmas because they sneer at the word and idea of Christ.
It is only 5 additional keystrokes to spell out the whole word, so the "I needed the space" argument is also bogus.

Some believe that abbreviation of their Lord's name to be an insult. That the only proper way is to spell it out fully. Contrast that with the view of many Jews that to spell out the full name of the God of Abraham as blasphemy.

The x is a symbol of the cross. I like the name Christian. I also like Christmas. I'd rather use the full name, not abbreviate it. Abbreviation I believe is degrading.

X is the symbol for the Greek letter "chi", the first letter in the word Christ. So, no insult, just an abbreviation.
ETA: I love it when I get a thumbs down for facts.
ETA again: tortdog makes an excellent point. Heck, Jesus was Jewish...

Well, any religious group has some "hypersensitive" members. Most of them I know would just read over it and not think twice. Don't worry about them.
