They are both great family dogs, however I'd be more likely to go with a dobie. They are much better to have if you visit people often and take the dog with you, they will let you have visitors to the house and won't be overly territorial/aggressive with new people. I think overall dobies have a better temperment for a family atmosphere. They always want to be with you and will do anything to please you, and the minute they realize that they did something wrong they are the most pathetic little whimpering babies you have ever seen. They're called velcrodobes for a reason, they want to be with you whether you're sleeping, cooking, doing dishes, watching tv, or running to the store.

I'm gonna go with german shepherd, although I like dobermans. I rescued an adult red dobie years ago and he had some issues as a result of being mistreated in ways that were undetermined. But I loved him and he turned out okay. He was a little guarded around strangers and probably wouldn't have done well with children, but he got along great in a house full of guys(I was going to school at the time) I also worked as a counselor in a group home which consisted of about 80 mentally challenged adults where he pretty much established himself as the resident mascot. Hard to say how he would've been had he never suffered mistreatment from others previously.

I would say a dobermann because I have been attacked by many german shepherds starting at the age of four with no provocation. I have never been attacked by dobermanns and have been around them plenty of times. Also, my friends have been attacked at a young age by german shepherds so this is not just my opinion.

I would say German Shepherd because a dobermann is more of a guard dog and one person dog.

Dobermans have more of a ntaural guard instinct in them and can become aggrssive very quickly and on a dime! German Shepherds are better family dogs but the best family dogs are Labs or Goldens.

A German Shepherd that is well bred is more of a family dog. Dobies can be great dogs with a family but I think they are more standoffish with strangers.
When you have a family with kids you have to deal with others kids and their parents in and out of your home. A well-trained GSD is smart enough and confident enough to be friendly with all of them and gentle with your kids.
Definitely a GSD.

In general, the German Shepard is more attuned to family life than a Doberman. But we have had both and the dobie we had was not typical from what I heard. Scared of its own shadow, a huge couch potato and very clingy. I think its former owners had not been kind to it (my brother named him Rainbow for Gawds sake!). But it was his dog and he loved it just the way it was. Rainbow gladly sat through football game after football game with my brother, his friends or even me. The dog didn't even know he was a dog. And the German Shepard we had was a love. There wasn't a mean bone in the dogs body, and was everyones friend. There are plenty of web sites online detailing the different dogs characteristics, but the bottom line is get the one that suits you best, but don't be surprised if they bring something to the table and to your life that wasn't on the menu. If I was going to go for a gentle giant for young kids say, I would probably lean towards the golden or yellow labs. If I had high energy boys who wore me out, I might consider a JRT to wear them out, little girls, maybe a poodle. If I wanted a little protection along with general family friendliness, I'd probably lean towards the German Shepard, The best advise is to look at some mixes down at your local pound, they need a home and generally come with less inbreeding problems associated with puppy mills. They have less health issues, but not always. Most of the shelters these days work with the pets to be socialized, trained with basic commands and in some cases housebroken. A big plus for busy families. Check with your local shelters to see what they offer and suggest might work for your circumstances and don't be afraid to state what you are looking for. They want to match the animal to the home. I commend you on doing research PRIOR to taking in a pet for life, its a big decision and should be thought out! Good luck to you!

between the two breeds you have mentioned, the german shepherd is more of a family dog. however, there are other breeds that are even more desirable for a family dog...

German shepherds love children and will guard them with their lives. I've actually seen them be very protective of some of my friends children who own one. They will stay by the child if no adult is close by.

German shepherd, by far. I have two gs pups right now and they are the absolute sweetest creatures on earth. Our other male, was 12 when he died. He was an owner's dream pet. We still mourn losing him.
