My camera takes pictures of about 1.6 mb but after ive saved it in photoshop it goes to about 190-ish kb... as much as I enjoy the extra file space I can't help but wonder if this is reducing the resolution and quality of my pictures...

If you took a picture of a blank wall, then one color value would be sufficient to characterize the picture, with no information loss. As soon as you complicate the picture, things get interesting.

Most compression algorithms do involve a loss of resolution, but they attempt to minimize it.

it does tend to lower the resolution of the picture

There are options on how to save you. You are saving it in lower resolutions.

i dont think i have seen the pic get its resolution lowered neither there is any problem wid the pic like da pic getting blurred . but da file gets compressed ofcourse..
