Make sure that you are really suffering from insomnia by consulting your physician. There are a lot of sleep disorders that may mimic insomnia and are now more easily recognizable and treatable.
There are some relatively new medicines now on the market that are non-habit forming and can be taken for as long as your physician prescribes. Lunesta and Ambien CR (although the Ambien does have the possibility of dependence) are two good ones if you do, indeed, have insomnia.
Of course these are only suggestions and treatment will be left up to you and your physician's discretion.
He may suggest a sleep specialist if he feels you are not experiencing insomnia.
I have listed a favorite source for you to find more out about sleep disorders.
IF your condition is stress-related insomnia, you might also try accupuncture on a weekly basis and very basic yoga stretches a few hours before you go to bed. Another suggestion would be to learn how to perform deep breathing exercises and total relaxation exercises. Last, but not least, try establishing and keeping to a regular bedtime. In this day and age I realize that's a difficult thing to do, but try it for your health's sake.
People develop high blood pressure and all types of ailments from lack of sleep and not going into the REM -- rapid eye movement/dream stage -- stage of sleep (the most important phase of our sleep cycle).
Sweet dreams!!

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.
