Fleas are not usually found on bird and it is more likely to be mites.
First of all get in touch with the pet store and ask them to check on all their other birds.
Then ask them for a bird anti mite spray or powder which they should provide for free if you purchased the bird within the last 48 hours.
If the bird is infested you might need to take it to a vet for an injection to kill them.
The cage will also need to be treated with the anti mite to stop any reinfection.
If you have any other birds in the house that have been in contact with the new bird they will also need toi be treated.

I have never heard of a bird having fleas but at least call the vet and see what they say about fleas on a bird. I think your poor bird has something other than fleas. Birds are very fragile with going outside and can get very stressed from that and actually die from that stress or get respiratory problems. Pet shops are rarely a good place to buy a pet of any kind.

When I got my first budgie he had fleas when I got him but I dont blame the pet shop because fleas pass between birds really quickly so I bought a can of mite spray which seemed to work. But I later housed 2 bugdies for a couple of months which both had bad fleas and the mite spray wasnt working so I bought so ointment that you drip onto the back of their necks which did the trick!!! hope this helps you, gud luck with your new cockatiel!!!!

I think there is a spray at the pet store that you can use. If you are not sure call an Avian vet, they should have something to sell you!
P.S. Pet stores only sell you animals because they want your money....They don't give a crap about the health of the animal!
Good luck to you and your bird buddy!

Get some mite spray, give your bird a shower, use a clean spray bottle with luke warm water in it, spray over the bird, let him spread his wings, then let him dry off, and spray him with the mite spray. give his cage a good clean and he should be fine. Do this often. If you have other birds, do it to them too.
I would call the pet shop and complain.

They are most likely called mites or lice. They can have a bad effect on your bird, anyway. They suck blood from the bird and you could get them too. You might what to first try a product called Scalex Mite and Lice Spray for Birds. You can get it at Petsmart.
