fill it with newspaper then apply polyfiller it works a treat

Use sheet rock compound (you can also buy very small cans of something similar to this compound at Lowes which is very quick drying). If it's a smooth ceiling, wait until it's dry and then sand it down, then paint the ceiling. If it's textured, use a texture brush tool or sponge to try to match as closely as you can the current texture of the ceiling and then paint the ceiling.

Polyfiller's your best bet. If it's quite deep you can buy a can of stuff from a DIY store that's like foam and expands to fill the space. Be careful though, you'll only need a little bit.

A mate was once moving from his flat, and there was a small hole that had to be filled. We made a stiff paste of plain flour... he was not charged for a repair, they must have painted right over it. Who knows how long it would hold, however.

Clean off all loose plaster and fill with tetron or polyfilla scrap off so it is level when dry rub down with glass paper and emulsion whole ceiling

if its real small then try toothpaste ..yup it really works!!! for bigger areas why not buy some ready made plaster BUT ensure you smooth it off properly or it looks dire when dry and all the uneveness shows up big time

Use drywall compound, let it dry good . Use a wet sponge to smooth it out. No sanding mess.

Try papier mache,once it's dry,use some polyfiller to neaten it up,let it dry,sand,then repaint.
