Just wondering. They are supposed to be superpowers but when was the last time they fought? Or is this a more of a history question?

The last real war that Russia was in was when Afghanistan handed them there A$$ on a platter 1980-1987. China was a supporter of North Vietnam but wasn't really at war. When the supported North Korea in the Korean War. They basically lost that one when the US led NATO troops pushed them back above the 38th parallel. Both now just sit back and watch the world go by and sell arms.

They ARE superpowers, not only supposed to be ones. Russia is still at war with Georgia and China never signed the peace accord with Taiwan. They are still at war.

It was WW2 for both, in the sense of open warfare. The Chinese fought against a Japanese invasion, and Russia of course against the invasion of Germany. But...maybe that was WW1)arrg.
Technically, both are still teetered on war. China does not want to see a democratic and free Taiwan, and Russia does not want to lose the powergrip its losing with states within itself. Invasion of Afghanistan was Russia's last big all out....i think.

I love this question on many levels.

"Or is this a more of a history question?". Well considering you asked about their military HISTORY what do you think ? Think before you ask.
Also: Do wars make superpowers? I think a large Army/Navy/Air Force with a large nuclear arsenal would be enough.

To really answer your question: Russia - Afghanistan or Chechnya ( ever heard of them ?)
China - WWII.
