I think the best policy is to shake hands when u meet them for the first time then move on to a kiss. I have found in the past some people dont like the thought of a stranger invading thier personal space but dont mind a little peck to say goodbye.

Kissing shaking or hugging these are all cultural things and it vary from region to region
In some society there is kissing in some only shaking and in some hugging too but in Japan I think they bow head in front of each other instead of having kissing hugging or shake hands

I kiss friends. I kiss family. I kiss good friends of friends or family who I'm meeting for the first time. I shake hands with patients and their relatives in work (I'm a nurse) and quite often shake hands with people I'm meeting for the first time who I have no particular connection with. I think the main thing is to use your judgement at the time.

In the part of the United States where I live, it is not standard practice for people of any gender to kiss when they greet each other. Nevertheless, I love the personal contact, so I have told friends that it's okay to kiss me when they greet me, and they sometimes do. With people who kiss me, I reciprocate. I certainly hope to kiss my future husband when greeting him regularly.

In Mexico City, where I lived for a little while, it is standard practice for a woman to kiss a friend of either gender when greeting.

It mostly depends of the country your are from and the local habits. In France for example you kiss your friends to greet them but shake hands to unknown people. Depending which part of France you can give from 1 to 4 kisses ! Men often kiss other men but only if the other is for example your best friend since years.
BTW.....I'm French living in UK and hugging is very new to me lol

Family and good friends - kiss if it has been a while since seeing them. With friends - shake hands.

Usually kiss family. Anyone else is a hand shake. However, I have met a few non-family members who kiss everyone else they meet. That was a little awkward, but once I noticed they do it to everyone it wasn't as bad.
