The negative connotation of a 'preppy' type typically means; shallow, materialistic, overprivelidged, self absorbed and not too bright.
Do any of those fit you?? If so, you might want to rethink your life. If not, then the guy's a jerk and just ignore him.

They mean,
"Stop caring about your wardrobe more than me."
A prep is your stereotypical teenaged girl. Have you seen the movie Mean Girls? The Plastics are all preps- caring about exactly how many calories they eat, what's the latest fashion, that sort of thing. Playing with hair, acting (not being) cute etc. Put bluntly, nobody likes a prep except other preps, because everyone thinks they're stuck up.
If you *are* prep-like, don't consider it a bad thing. If guys have a problem with it, then maybe you're being too preppy, but ultimately it's your decision who you want to be.
