I'm a 42 yo male who hasn't had a girlfriend since college (1989). I've had a lot of bad first dates and more recently have found that women are scared off when they find out how long it's been since I was in a relationship. Because of this I've stopped asking women out and asked friends to stop trying to fix me up.
I'm thinking that maybe I need to date a woman I'm not attracted to just so that I can tell future prospective dates that I just got out of a relationship.
Any other ideas? (please don't suggest dating websites)

i think you havent found a true person at heart. if that perso lives you she will not have a problem in how long it took you to be in another relationship so dont go around looking for something you dont want but rather keep looking until that which you want also wants you in return regardless of your circumstances

There is always hope. Hopelessness is a scenario where you just stop believing in the hope that is still there.
Love is out there. I guess it's very difficult to find, but experiment. Just date women, all sorts of personalities and looks. Maybe you'll find one you really come to love, and maybe she'll love you back? I guess you have to try, or else you'll never know. You're not getting any younger, either, so what are you waiting for?

Aww sorry to hear that maybe you need to do a make-over of your look and how you dress bring your youth back you know, or maybe you need to go after younger woman and i mean WOMAN!!! not kids lol but yeah don't tell women the last time you had a relationship just say it's been a while and i'm looking for something real.

Of course there is hope for you! You just have to leave behind the attitude of not wanting to ask women out anymore! And if you experienced that they are scared off when they find out about the long single period...just don't tell them! It's not important!Just be yourself, be relaxed, just try to know the other person.
Just be sure not to be too stressed when it comes to the Big Moment!;)
Your luck will find you eventually! Don't give up!

I don't think you need to do that. You don't have to explain yourself to a woman you go out with especially if she can see your a nice person. Okay you haven't had a serious relationship in a long time . alot of our society doesn't have serious relationships that often either. Just be you & don't settle for less.
