The Bates method is really good for helping to prevent, or even reverse, eye problems. There's a good book by Jonathan Barnes that has helped me - it's worth looking into.

ARMD (Age related macular degeneration) is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 65 in the UK. It occurs when the layer of the retina responsible for nourishing the macular's light sensitive rod and cone cells and for carrying away waste products, starts to function less effectively as it ages. Cells in the macula break down, causing loss of sight in the central part of the field of vision.
There are 2 types wet and dry.
Dry is the most common and occurs when the build up of waste material and lack of proper nutrition causes a gradual deterioration of the macula, usually over many years. Dry does not usually cause a total loss of reading vision.
Wet is less common. It occurs when tiny new abnormal vessels begin to grow behind the retina towards the macula. They usually leak blood and fluid, damaging the macula and causing a more rapid loss of central vision.
Your optitian or GP can refer you to your local ophthalmic clinic where, depending upon what type of ARMD the patient has, can perform laser treatment to slow down the progression of the loss of sight. One treatment is called PDT (Photodynamic Therapy) but this is very expensive and so the treatment is not always available on the NHS.
I hope this helps!

twokay is right.
It's macular degeneration most likely- but could be glaucoma or cataracts possibly. He must go and see the doctor- we cannot diagnose it for you and nor can the the optician. Make an appointment very soon with his doctor, so he can be referred to a specialist eye consultant. Time is important.
Get it seen to as soon as possible- ask your husbands doctor if he can go to Moorfields eye hospital- they saved by hubby's mother's site there.
