In short it depends a lot on how computer literate you are... Photoshop is realativley easy to pick up, but to get professional results takes time, patience and lots of practice. Luckly for the novice there are many books and web tutorials to help you improve your photoshopping skills. Also I should mentin that although photoshop is the industry standard package for editing and manipulating photographs, it is hidiously expensive, and there are many cheape alternatives available for the home user, like corel photopaint or MS Digital image suite.

No. I work with Photoshop everyday, and you can only fix these pictures if he embedded the layers (meaning you received a Photoshop file, which you wouldn't even be able to open if you don't have Photoshop). He probably gave them to you as .tif or .jpg files, which would be very difficult for you to edit this way.
Just tell him you want the original files.

YOu can't clean up and suerimposed pic, it'll just get worst and more deformed. Ask him to stop being a jerk and send the orginals. He obviously thinks he funny, just let him know that it's not and you would like the orginals, untouched.
You should always start with an orginal to touch up on photoshop.

you can correct them, but it is really hard to get it to look right and it takes a lot of practise. Ask him for a copy of the ordinal ones or another family friend.

i do freelance photography and i too have played with photo-shop you can undo these things......you can mess about with your pics and do what ever you like with them because the originals will always be saved in another folder...you didn't say who it was who's retired...is it your dad or grandad? just ask him nicely if he can leave your pics as they are.....it is fun to muck about with your pics....but it's no big deal...your originals should still be there....don't worry too much...boys and their toys eh....lol...
