Get the D80:
* Bigger viewfinder
* Decent sized grip
* Spot metering
* 'Feels' better - with the dRebel line, I'm always afraid that I'll snap the camera in half.
Vs. the XTi:
* Better image quality at high ISO levels (above 800)
* Dust reduction system
Both brands have an excellent selection of lenses and a good upgrade path - there's no reason to favor one brand over the other.
The review sites seem to agree that the D80 is worth the extra $200:

The D80 can be bought as a kit with the 18-135. This is a nice all-in-one lens, but I'd prefer the Nikon 18-70. This is a better quality lens for the same price.

Hard to say ...Canon XTi 40D is good but don't take the standard lens. My choice was XTi 40D (body) + Canon EF 17-85 IS USM as a lens (IS= image stabilizer). and ISO 1600 is really impressive. The whole camera kit is very well balanced in terms of weight and grip.

I can tell that this is going to be the big question between now and Christmas. I agree with OMG 100%. You will love the Nikon and his lens recommendation. I got that lens for my wife and liked it so much, I bought one for myself as a backup.

nikon, unless you already have canon lenses, then you should stay with that format...if you are new, go with nikon.
