It really depends on what your budget is. You can get a room for under $300 per night. But more than likely it will cost over $100 per night. And there are taxes on top of the room charge.
For food - again it depends on how you are used to eating. Most days I spend about $3 on breakfast, $9 on lunch and about $15 on dinner. For nice dinners out, that goes up to about $40 for dinner, more if you drink a lot.
The other expense will be what kinds of things you want to do when you are here. If you want to see all the museums, then you have to add in the admission costs. Most tourist attractions will cost about $15 or so.
Your final expense will be transportation. You can get an unlimited ride Metrocard for the buses and subways for $17 for seven days. However, if you start taking taxis, then it will cost much more. A good way to save is to take the subways during the day, and save the taxi rides for late night trips home.

I just visited travelocity after reading your question and it gave a price range on hotels in NYC. The cheapest was 322dollars/night and the most expensive was well over 900dollars/night so it depends how nice of a hotel you want. And since I don't know where you live I can't give you a good estimate on how much it will cost you to get there, but I would recommend www.travelocity.com. There you can find hotel prices and even reserve your room right on line, but you can also look into plane prices if you do have to fly there. Other than getting there and the hotel it depends how much shopping you do so Good Luck! NYC is a blast.

You can get a room for around 100 bucks per day either in Manhattan or neighboring boroughs. Food depends on u from 20 bucks a day to 200 bucks per day. I ll go with the lower limit. Sigthseeing etc, another 250 bucks. So over all i would say a 1k.
You can do it cheaper if you stay at Youth hostels etc. I have spent a week in NYC in 250 bucks and had fun.
