when approaching a girl who is not doing anything, just waiting for a bus/train?

Obviously I would wait till I caught her eye smile and say hi if I'm close enough.

Me: How's it going?
Her: Yeah, not too bad. Just finished exams.
Me: Congrats. How do you think you went?
Her: Pretty good I hope. Not so sure about algebra.
Me: Yeah I was never too good with that stuff either.

This is just an example, made it up. But as you can see there's a base topic - exams and algebra. Once that dries up, I am stranded cos I have no clue how to extend the conversation. This is my main problem, that once a topic is finished, I don't know where/how to take the conversation. Give me some tips on what to do please. And advice on what to talk about to a woman.

Are topics like work and things like news events taboo? Like you should never go there?

Just start by smiling...the rest should go from there. I think it's a bad idea pre-planning everything in your head right down to the last word of everything you're going to say. That's putting waaaay too much pressure on yourself. Relax. Each situation is unique, once the conversation gets going, you'll automatically know what to say next...it'll happen spotaneously...

firsr rule: if a girl is interested in talking with u and getting to know u betetr she will also try and find some topics for conversation. if she were interested for instance in the example u showed above she would have started asking u why weren't u good in algebra? maybe u didn't like it or a teacher was bad? what do u do now? where do u study? what was your favorite subject at school and yada yada yada. so this is the first rule: if a girl isn't making any attempt to keep conversation going she doesn't want to talk with u and finds it awkward and wants u to leave.
but if somehow u feel she is interested in getting to know u u might ask what's her name, whether she has any pets, what re her hobbies and u go from there. for instance u ask "what was your favorite siúbject at school?" she says music. u start bragging about music and stuff. u might ask about hobbies. she answers tennis. u say o, i love tennis (even if u don't and u played onoy once in your life) and start bragging about that - how it is nice to go and play tennis on a nice spring day, how u go with friends and blah blah. u might as well to set a date for playing tennis with her. anyway, my strong opinion - if a girl wants talking with u she will try and find what to talk about too. so conversation won't die

Follow it through, say that was the conversation, ask what subjects she is good at. Who knows, you might have something in common, compare subjects, teachers, anything there's allot of conversations that can branch off a "typical subject" and if you really wanna appeal to her, GET INTERESTED! I can't stress enough how hot it is when a boy cares!

No you can ask a girl anything, but th real question is do you want her to seem interested??? Compliment her..ie her hair, smile or eyes, not her cleavage or lenght of her skirt... Good Luck

as you can see in your examples there is nothing we can tell you to say other than the initial "hows it going?" because after that you need to react to what she says and feel out her current attitude. Maybe if you had known she had taken exams you could bring it up in attempt to control the situation.

you: my name is....what's yours
her:(gives you her name)
you: so what are you into besides exams?
Her: i like to read ,dance,sing,.......in my spare time

and there you have it - ice broken, conversation started. Not to mention the kudos for asking her about her interests and not talking about yourself. Good Luck
