a dog bringing its food dish is a begger, mine brings me food and beer. and after that she throws away the trash. Who else can claim that they have a dog that is loyal enough to throw away trash without shredding it first.(which took a while to teach her) and beyond that Border Collies are the best dogs by far in my opinon. unless your a 70 year old woman that just wants a lap dog, then get a bichon... or however its spelled

I have taught my dog commands to sign language !!! It only takes him about 5 minutes to learn a trick he is very intelligent. Sorry though he is not a Border Collie but a Rednose Pitbull Terrier. I also had a friend that had a New Zealand Huntaway that was a very intelligent dog too. We asked her to write down all the things that her dog could do on a piece of paper and she came back with 3 pages of tricks and commands every line full. They were very specific things that she taught him very amazing.

Border Collies are pretty fun dogs. One of my friends has one and she is one of the sweetest and smartest dogs that I know. Personally, however, I'm a bigger fan of Norwegian Elkhounds. Someone earlier posted that there's a "best" breed for everyone, and that's the one that does it for me. :)
Btw, very impressive on teaching her those tricks! That's really cool. How long did it take? Did you use any particular type of method? Just curious.

My girlfriend and I have 1.5 year old Border Collie. Love her to death. I personally think they are more intelligent and more well mannered than most dogs...as far which breed is smartest, I don't know. But I do know you ain't gonna convince me that there is any other dog in the world that is a smarter or better dog than our Morgan.

My dog may not know a gazillion commands, but he is the greatest dog in the world - for me. 'Best breed' is a matter of what fits your lifestyle! A Border Collie would drive me crazy - all that energy and 'tell me what to do?' attitude wanting direction & something to do non-stop is not for me - glad you like & can handle it. I will stick with my fun-loving comedian Boxer. He may not always do what he is told, but I guarantee he will do something funny to duck out of it that makes me laugh! More Robin Williams & less Richard Simmons personality makes my day.

There are as many dogs well suited for as many kinds of humans. Border collies and Australian cattle dogs have recently found their place on my favorite dog list. They're smart and if you give 'em lots of exercise they'll just love you for it. I like miniature wiener dogs too, but they don't make very good running companions.

i have 4 assorted mixes that each have there own specialness (according to their breed). but up until may 2005, for 15 yrs, i lived with a border collie/golden ret. x. timber was awesome. i rescued him from a severly abusive home which did make him vicious to men and kids. but he was completly devoted to me and the best watch dog ever. my son was safe because he was mine. as long as boe didn't try to touch timber all was good. if i pointed at something i needed and snapped my fingers, timber would bring it to me. after about a year of seclusion i decided to bring timber around people and we started with an obedience class. he graduated at the very top of his class for basic obedience (even though he tried to bite the instructor- it was her fault and she apologised to him). i thought someday i'd like to start breeding them as a new breed. but with all the homeless pets in shelters, my common sense and conscience just won't let me add to the problem.

Border collies are very smart dogs but they are bred to herd cattle and sheep. They need a lot of active things to do. You need to keep them busy.

Australian Sheppard's are a lot smarter than Border Collie's in my opinion but that's what happens when people try to compare breeds you get a lot of debate and people often get mad over someones opinion. Any dog can be smart and do anything you train them to do.
