Yes, I've had it.
The virus is dormant in your nerve tissues and can flare up at any time, though most often due to the lowering of the immune system by stress.
The pain and blisters can take up to 6 weeks to disappear, and he will feel a bit rough until it has totally gone.
This page tells you a little more about it:

The bodies natural response to illness is to want to sleep as that's when the body is able to do the most healing. I felt SO tired for weeks.
The best thing for him to do is just take it easy, eat a balanced diet, drink fruit juice, stay warm and not stay up too late at night for a while.
If he can try and take it easy for a while at work, that will help as it will take some of the stress off.
You could suggest he takes up meditation or something to help him relax a bit more.

I had Shingles for the first time a few weeks ago. I am normally in good health and haven't had any other health challenges before, so it came as a surprise.
Shingles is probably the most painful thing I have ever encountered. I went to the doctor, and he gave me some prescription drugs to take that was suposed to help, but didn't.
My wife found the Fast Shingles Cure ebook online and bought it for me, I am very lucky to have such a wonderful woman in my life. We followed the book, did what it said, and it delivered what it promised. Finally my Shingles rash is over... I feel truly blessed and thankful.

Depending on the severity of the illness, it can affect you anywhere from a week to two months, occasionally longer, even thought the rash itself may well have scabbed over and the sufferer is no longer contagious long before this time. The reason for this is that shingles tends to occur in the elderly, the very young, or in people who are 'run down' and thus have a lowered immune system.
Your boyfriend needs to make sure he is well rested and thoroughly recovered before going back to work; shingles is often an indicator that he hasn't been taking enough care of himself. His doctor can prescribe Aciclovir, an anti-viral drug if his symptoms don't seem to be improving.

I had shingles during my exams at Uni. The worst of it went within 2 weeks, but I was left constantly tired and generally feeling yuck (a bit like constant flu) for the next 6 weeks. So it is very likely that your boyfriend is still suffering because of the shingles.
He could always ask the doctor to give him another sick note so he can get plenty of rest. Remember that his immune system will be lower so he should also avoid people with colds, flu etc.

yes that it before. Comes on with stress or when the immune system is over streached. Very sore and not nice at all. I'd say he should be taking it easy, for a while. That would or course depend on his job, if it is stressful or physical in nature. A doctor is the best one to consult on this one.
