i put him down for his sleep and he wriggles around abit until he falls asleep. The past few days he has been getting his legs stuck between the rails in the cot and cant move and he cries. Is there anything i can do to prevent it? He seems to do it heaps lately and it scares me that he will really hurt himself. It is a brand new cot with all safety regulations so this really shouldnt be happening..

A Crib is called a COT here in Australia if you didnt know.
We cant really do the sleeping bag thing because it just gets too hot overnight here at the moment, we are entering summer soon over here.
I dont have those padded bumper things, i have heard of them but nobody really uses them over here so i dont know if they actually sell them. As for moving him into a big bed, thats what i was thinking. But i really think that hes just too little for a big bed just yet. He can walk and has been since he was 11months, but he still has a bit of a muck around in his cot before he falls to sleep so hed probably be running around in his bedroom playing with all his toys and never sleep! haha.

Hi, this sounds tricky.
Don't hunt for a bumper. They are too soft and your son is probably pulling himself up to a stand by now---if not starting to walk. If he puts his foot on the bumper it will not support his weight. It will crush under his foot, he will lose his balance and the foot and leg might slip through the space---hard.
Call your local pediatric hospital. I know this sounds silly but they have lots of kids come through and they use up to date beds. This must have happened before. Tell them you have questions about crib safety---sorry cot safety---and they can connect you with someone. If that person doesn't know and they are good at their job they will start helping you search for answers.
Also call the manufacturer of your cot and tell them what the problem is and see if they sell/make anything.
Is there one spot where he gets stuck all the time? You could find out the spacing the crib is supposed to have and measure the space to make sure its correct. Nothing is perfect and sometimes manufacturers make mistakes---that's why they have recalls.
Also check and see if the crib was recalled for this reason. A few years ago my oldest son's car seat was recalled two years after he stopped using it!
Good luck and best wishes. Until you find a solution you might want to keep some vegetable oil handy near his room in case you have to make his leg slippery to get it back through.

Is a cot a crib? If so, do you have the bumper around the edge of it? If not try one of those. If you do, maybe it's time to ge rid of the crib, though I do know he's young, and get him a kiddie bed with a rail around it. Just a suggestion. Some kids are ready earlier then others.

The cot is not safe for the child. You can buy a "bumper" to stop this from occurring. It is a strip of padded fabric which can be tied securely to every second rail. It acts as a barrier for the child, so that if he does roll into the rails, his legs would be prevented from slipping through.

If he's walking then get him a proper bed and use safety guards to stop him falling out. Did this with both of mine(and will do the same when no3 gets to that age) and it not only stops them hurting themselves but it negates the whole changing to a 'big bed' drama later. We put a stair-gate on the bedroom door and lock it to prevent any 'great escapes' at nap time and bedtime, the other bonus is you're instilling bedtime means bedtime early too-far less aggravation than at 2yrs old if you do it now.

Get your boy a body bag to sleep in. Sorta' like a sleeping bag. I have one for a size 110 centimeter kid. My 15 month old uses that and it'll be big enough for him to use it for awhile.
It'll keep your kid from getting his legs stuck between the railing.
I don't know what you mean by a 'cot', but I use a baby crib. It's big enough for children to use until they are 2 or 3.

Get rid of the crib. Put the mattress on the floor. Or get a youth bed and a guard rail that slips under the mattress.

Get rid of the cot and get him a little boy bed with rails. I'd have him sleep in a sleeping bag until you can get one.

- Use a bumber what is pushed down between the mattress
- Use a mesh bumper designed to keep pacifiers in
- Have your child wear a sleep blanket.

I am suprised that the up to date crib isn't safe enough for your child.
Do you have bumper guards around the sides of the inner crib?
Or put stuffed animals around the edge
