Swallowed gum will take longer to digest than a sandwich. The stomach does not digest the gum ,it just passes through your system in a day or two. Your stomach is very acidic that will disslove the gum, which is another reason it will not stay forever in your stomach. Your stomach has a pH of 1-3. pH is a measure of the hydrogen ion concentration. An acid is a hydrogen ion or a proton donor. Even though chewing gum's base is indigestable it does no harm if you swallow it.

There is an "Old Wives" tale that says that swallowed chewing-gum would strangle the intestines. Don't believe "Old Wives" - no harm will come to you. The gum will dissolve like everything else edible you eat.
