I have lots of books and my dog reads them while I'm at work. She stole my credit card once and then used it to purchase chewy toys. I really need to have a long talk with that dog.

They are smart because animals always adapt to the environment, and so only the best survives (Darwin's evolution theory).
The most interesting thing is that intelligence is transmitted genetically, because they only breed according to the natural selection.
So this is the answer, why humans are not smart.

because they have lived alongside humans a long time and have learnt several behaviours. dogs are inteligent and know how to get what they want :)
