In most states it is between $2.00 and $3.00, usually closer to $2.00. You get tips and if there are busboys you must give them a percentage. If there are no busboys you bus your own tables but get to keep more. Some restaurants the servers put all the tips together and split them. Do not work in a place like that if you are a good server as some are not and it will affect your take home money. If someone not tipped helps you tip them accordingly at the end of your shift but if the manager helps you then you should not tip him, it is wrong of them to take your money and they are not good managers if they expect or accept it. If you are quick and friendly you can make a lot of money at a good restaurant but it is hard work. If you are the customer instead of the server tip about 20% for good service and a little more for excellent service. If the service gets by but not very good then give a 10 to 15%. If it is really bad leave no tip and ask to speak to the manager. Sometimes the price of your dinner will be reduced for the poor service. ◘

Most places (and states) servers only make a little over $2 an hour (like $2.13 or $2.17) because they are EXPECTED to get tips. This is why they have to declare their tip income. This is also why eating at a place like TGI Fridays cost you around $30-35 for 2 people instead of it costing $60. If you ever have a problem with service, leave the minimum considered acceptable (15% of the bill, before tax) and then address it with the management of the establishment.
