Black pudding, as made in the UK, is a blend of onions, pork fat, oatmeal, flavourings - and blood (usually from a pig). As long as animals have been slaughtered to provide food, blood sausages like black pudding have been in existence.

My mother once told me she used to love this stuff as a child...that was until someone kindly informed her that she was eating a big ol piece of processed pig scab LOL. One of its main components is pigs blood...hence its colour.

If you ever saw the British Comedy " The Goodies " back in the eighties, you would also know there is a martial art called " Eckythump " which involes beating people up with a black pudding. :)

Blood pudding is a sausage made by cooking animal blood (pig or cattle) with meat, fat or other filler until it is thick enough to congeal when cooled.

My husband loves it but he has to cook it himself because I can stand the smell or the sight of it.

I think your referring to what I know as Scottish "blood pudding", and that is made of entrails, blood and oatmeal in casing. Poor man's sausage.
