My Daddy and I always went in the woods to hunt the perfect Christmas tree.
The poem, "The Night Before Christmas" was always kept in a kitchen drawer. Every Christmas Eve, my mother took it out and read it. It was an old and yellowed newspaper clipping, I wish I still had it.
We lived on a farm (I still live here) and had chickens. Daddy would kill one on Saturday afternoon. Mama would pluck and dress it and we would eat it for Sunday dinner. Mama cooked it in an old electric frying pan and made gravy, I have never had anything better!
My parents adopted me when they were in their 60s. So I didn't get to keep them for too many years, Daddy died when I was 17. Mama lived to be 92, and I was 33 when she died. So appreciate your parents while they are still here!

My father takes me Christmas shopping and out for a meal every year. He takes my sister, too, separately. I love having this time alone with my dad every year. We help him choose gifts for my mother, but mostly it's about spending time with him. When my sister lived away from the rest of the family, she would make a point to come home during the holidays for her special shopping trip. I'm nearly 40 years old and this is still a very big deal. I've already made my "date" with him for this year.

When I was a little girl my father would start a Christmas box in Sept. He would keep it in the bedroom and every week he would add to it. There would be chocolates, candy and every kind of treat you could think of. When Christmas rolled around the bedroom would be overflowing with boxes of goodies lol
I carried on that tradition with my 3 sons

My parents made me do things I hated.
I appreciate the knowledge it gave me.
Church on Sunday, Christmas dinner. Not talking on the phone until dishes were done, no going out Saturday morning until my bed was made and room was vacuumed. If I missed the bus for piano lessons, I walked. I guess you could say it was a well monitered childhood. They guided me, I did not make the rules.

Since my dad was little, everytime he went past a little milk bar in another town he would stop & buy a strawberry milkshake. Now whenever my brothers or myself are going past that milk bar we always pull over for a strawberry milkshake. My dad is 53 now, thats a lot of milkshakes, but its sweet cause thats what him & his dad did. His dad died when my dad was 11 yrs old and he has carried on this tradition ever since. It silly but we know it means a lot to him.

One thing we did growing up that I still do for my family now is no matter what, for every birthday for every family member I decorate the house with birthday decorations. I think it's important for your kids to know how important they are to you and what better way to go all out for the day that they came into your life!

Going to dinner at my Grandma's house every Easter, Mother's Day,Thanksgiving, & Christmas...Grandma has been gone for 6 yrs now, but my sister & I carry on the tradition with our Mother & our kids. Now, after dinner, we go to see Grandma & bring her a rose in her favorite color...purple & we add another angel to our tree at Christmas for her.

I also make Grandma's dressing for each occasion as well...just like she did...
