I don't know the answer so I wrote a poem based on the first line.
Why does the spider when he spins his web
Knit together his silken thread
And make his trap of gossamer strings
To take a catch brought on the wind?
Why does the fly and the insect let
The spider catch them in his net?
He takes his meal from tiny things
A makes a meal for bigger things
Just a thought about ecology and the food 'web'. Male spiders do spin webs by the way, for food at first then for mating.

As other answers have indicated, the female does not often eat the male after mating, though in at least one species it seems that she normally does. All male spiders that belong to web spinning species spin webs when they are juveniles. Some of them stop making webs when they mature and spend all their time hunting for a female to mate with. Many kinds of spiders do not spin prey- catching webs in either sex. All spiders use silk for some purpose, but not necessarily for catching prey.
