Is she cleaning the kitty litter enough when they're inside?
Cats love cleanliness. I had this problem when I had three, they were sharing a litter box and they hated it so they did their business elsewhere, like on my lovely clean benches! Needless to say we bought another litter box which solved the problem.
Try coating the drainer with pungent solutions like vinegar, lemon juice and citrus smells.
I hope this gets rectified soon.

Some house hold cleaners contain ammonium, which attracts the cat to that area as a place they can go to pee, try cleaning the area with bi logical washing powder, diluted in warm water and wipe away thoroughly.Never use Vinegar as it has the same affect as some cleaners. Also keep a water spray by the cooker , if you see the cat on the kitchen top spray some clean water at them, they'll soon associate that it is bad. Praise the cat and give them a treat when they do go in the right place.
If it hasn't done this before maybe you should look at what has changed in the household? Have they moved house, new person moved in, new baby... cats are sensitive and need time to adjust to big changes.

Wow thats wierd! I suspect that the cleaning agent she is using in her kitchen is ammonia based or has bleach in it. Or, if not, it smells like the cleaner she uses in an area they do go toilet, like their litter tray etc.

The way to stop this is to use a different cleaning prodct - look for something with a citrus scent which cats dislike and something that contains no bleach.
Place items on the drainer and cooker top like heavy pots. If the cats persist in using the area, they will have to knock the pots off and the bang and crash will help to put them off.

Cats are very persistant and habitual about their toilet areas but by making these areas unpleasant for the cats and making sure they have easy access to outdoors, she can stop them.

Hope it works!

Make it go outside. I had a cat for 8 years and after the first 2 weeks of using a tray as she had to be kept in, she never had a tray again and never once did her business inside the house. There is no need for a cat to do this, they can be easily trained to do their toilet outside.

Maybe your friend is using a new cleaning product that smells like cat pheromones. Your friends cat smells this and pees in retaliation, trying to claim her territory back. Suggest she tries an unscented cleaning product and see if there's any change.

It may be the fact that you are cleaning it with an ammonia based cleaner. Cats often mistake this for another cat's urine and therefor a threat. Try out a non-ammonia based cleaner and see if that helps.

Put a few drops of her urine in the sandbox where you
want her to pee in. Clean the drainer and surrounding
area with disinfectant.

I think the cat prefers the drainer because it gets splashback when it ises the sink direct.

an astounding sort of rugs have a rubber backing which includes an ammonia-like scent, which your cat would be interested in. in line with probability wash the rug to bathe the hot scent out, or spray something on the rug including something citrus, which cats hate.

Your friend could scatter orange peels on these areas - cats hate it. And keep the litter tray (if she uses one) really clean xxx
