Sam, I don't know if you are expecting personal view points or direct answers? There are many variables involved in language learning. It dependends, first of all, on one's innate abilities and needs. The teacher(s), the method(s), time, effort and dedication are also important. Undoubtedly, if you live in the country where your target language is spoken (Korea), you will learn faster than you would outside of it. YOU'LL NEVER FIND OUT HOW DIFFICULT IT IS OR CAN BE IF YOU DON'T TRY.

Like every language, Korean would would be just as difficult, depending on what langauges you already know. For example, knowing chinese and japanese may help your korean a bit. SInce they're geographically close, there has been a lot of interaction throughout time and some words become cognates in 2, or 3 of the langauges.

The culture is also difficult to learn. But, once agian, if you're familiar with Japanese for Chinese culture, adapting to the korean one isn;'t that difficult. All of these 3 cultures have Confuician teachings in them.

As previously stated, the will and the need to learn a language has to be strong enough for success.

to learn it fluently, takes years and years. I was in school for aclose to 2 years, where all I was supposed to do was learn Korean and I still suck at it. Some people really took to it though and got pretty freaking good. So a year and a half if your pretty good and have a good amount of time to study
