Don't do it. Get a lawyer, even a public defender if you have to, just don't defend yourself.

#1 Stop shoplifting.
#2 Were you caught redhanded? Most retail stores have a policy that the security/loss prevention officer cannot detain you unless they saw you take the item(s) and walk out with it.
Usually for a shoplifting case you are pretty much screwed. Did you do it? If so you can either acknowledge it and plead guilty or you can take your chances and go to trial. I gotta tell you though....prosecutors LOVE it when someone represents themselves. The citizen doesn't know all the ins and out of court and I have never seen anyone represent themselves and get a not guilty.
If you are not going to invest in an attorney tell the prosecutor you want a deal. They will usually offer something so they don't have to waste time on a simple petty theft when they have bigger fish to fry. Get ahold of the prosecutor that has your case. See what they offer.

I am sure you know that old saying: He who represents himself is a fool. Maybe you can get a court appointed lawyer.
