Most people who commit suicide are mentally ill. They have a serious depression or other serious mental illnesses. They suffer a lot and cannot think clearly when they reach this point. They have lost all hope and usually think of themselves as complete failures who can do nothing right and who deserve nothing good. In reality they are just ill, the chemicals in their brain are in wrong proportions, which messes up their mental state. They can't help thinking the way they do, people aren't really in their right mind once they are this ill.
Religions preaching that suicide is a sin doesn't help at all once people reach this point of the illness.
Not all Christians agree on whether committing suicide is a sin, but I think most Christians believe it is. Personally, I think that if there is a god and if this god punishes people for being ill, then it's a cruel god who I will neither love nor follow.

Catholics believe suicide when committed in full knowledge and deliberate consent is a complete turning away from God (a mortal sin) and will send a person to hell.
There are 3 conditions of a mortal sin: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent.
While suicide (or any kind of murder) is always a grave matter, people who commit suicide may not always have full knowledge of what they're doing. Drugs can definitely impair one's thinking, as can other things, such as diseases, intense pain, or anguish.
Therefore, suicide is not automatically treated as a mortal sin.
We are commanded by Christ not to judge others so we leave final judgment to God who alone knows each person's heart.
With love in Christ.

According to Islam committing suicide is considered as a sin as you kill a soul without the right to do so.
when you commit suicide , it is as if you killed someone else ,another soul.

I believe we are here experiencing life and to remember who we really are.. if it was that persons choice then that was their choice, they planned it so in this lifetime. One of my closest friends committed suicide and I dont think he went to hell for what he did, I dont believe in hell as most religious people do.
I think he will learn and grow from the experience in spirit and if returns again to this plain, will strive for better next time.

Chemicals. I'm not talking about drugs but the chemical makeup of someone's brain combined with their perception of what they are experiencing in life. Some people become so depressed that continuing to live with the pain in their head (and sometimes physical pain) is unbearable. They see ceasing to exist in this world as relief. If there is sin it is the "who or what" that would allow someone to live in such misery.

I think the Catholics believe that, I'm not sure, but that's a very good question I've wondered about that myself. I asked my Mother-in-Law about one time, but I asked if they were going to hell, and she said no, she said it says in the Bible they only sin you can't be forgiven for is blasphemy the Holy Spirit.

An unpardonable one in fact!
You almost had it right azra. JC fulfilled the 10 commandments and brought two new ones. The commandments of love 1 love your neighbor as yourself 2 love god with all of your heart mind and soul. If you do the two by living in love then the 10 are automatically fulfilled in your life.

No disrespect to you my dear I just couldn't help myself on this one!

directly breaking one of the 10 commandments set by God ........ as for the reasons they do it - i don't know really. i never really could distinguish if a person who commits a suicide is bold or a coward
TO KING KONG: that is so untrue ............ Jesus (pbuh) NEVER EVER said that God's commandments should be ignored ............his teaching was a supplement to 10 rules ........... and, yes, my dear, heaven is a reward for ur actions
10 commandments + love thy neighbour = formula for heaven
