Probably no more than about 30 miles. However, you need to go through most of Brooklyn, through Manhattan and some of Jersey City. It's gonna be jammed all the way through, so you're gonna be in the car a LONG time (perhaps an hour and a half).

Driving is horrible. They have shuttles from JFK to Newark. Atleast plan on 2-3 hours from Jfk to newark as you have to cut through entire NYC and pass holland tunnel. Even if you get 0 traffic look at 1.5 hours Minimum (personal experience).

If your luggage is not much, take the bus to penn station from JFK (12 bucks) and then take the New Jersey Transit train to newark (10 bucks). Fastest and easiest way.

JFK and Newark are necessary in order for NYC to cope with the amount of arrivals and departures each day. This is evident as everytime anyone visits either of the two airports they are packed (or have quite a high number of travellers).

JFK is in the borough of Queens NYC, actually located in Jamaica.

Newark airport is in New Jersey

It is approx 35 miles between the two, but can take anything between 1 and 2 hours.

I have used two modes to transfer between the two.

A taxi costs around $75 plus tolls and tips and takes around 75 minutes.

The Princeton airport transfer buses is good, costs $24 dollars, but you obviously have to wait for one to come in, so if you are on a tight schedule be warned.
