The original settlers were looking for a place where they could build an easily defensible port. Manhattan is high & dry & narrow enough to build a defense wall across the north (where Wall St is today) & fortifications to the south that could dominate all sea approaches. And it faced the navigable Hudson River to communicate with inland territories.

In the 15-18 century, City's were developed on areas that were easily defensible from enemies and pirates.

Most development in a new land takes place near rivers and seaports, so people and goods can get there easily. Manhattan has a great harbor and (I think) a couple of rivers.

Back in the day,. the surrounding area was low and marshy and the isle was higher and drier.At one point Manhatten(as it's called today) was a trash dump.
