Oh sweet Jesus don't tell him teddy bears and chocolates woman, what's wrong with you?? That is the sickest thing I've heard. Tell him not to buy anything at all until he gets to know her a bit better. I'm sure it won't ruin their night and the next time they meet up he can get something that he has thought of himself. If a guy bought me a teddy bear, on a first date or if we had been seeing each other for a while, it would go at the bottom of the wardrobe and he would get slagged off to hell for it. The best impression he can give her is to be sincere, honest and generally good company. Ask her questions, don't boast about job/personal wealth/car etc......don't allow an awkward bill situation to arise and pay for dinner. See her home and make arrangements to see her again within the next few days if things have gone well. Give her your best kiss ever.
If he is going to bring anything at all tell him a small bunch of flowers. Tulips are good and the red ones mean "Believe in me" - a good starting gesture.

When you are meeting a potential girlfriend for the first time, you don't give her anything.
Maybe in the third or fourth meeting, he should think of giving her a present.
Whether flowers, chocolates, teddys, scarfs or perfume, he can judge after the first few meetings.
Maybe a book or DVD could do the trick.

Silk scarves & perfume! These are over the top for a first date, it would seem like he was trying to "buy" her. Roses are too mainstream & might I say a little cliche. Think exotic or unsual...orchids [even a single stem], birds of paradise flowers or lillies. Tell him not to go too outrageous, he'll want this girl to like him for him. Not the gifts that he gives her. Also if he starts off expensive, she will expect him to keep upping the ante for subsequent special occasions.

Whoa. Tell Nick to slow down.
Nothing more than a small bunch of flowers or a box of chocolates. He doesn't want to send her running for the hills.
Definitely avoid anything expensive or too personal. A decent bottle of perfume would be both.

Ahhhhh he sounds nice, not many blokes that would bother!! I would definatly stick with a nice bunch of flowers! I think any thing else would be slightly over the top for a first meeting!! All us girls love flowers so you ncant go wrong or yes like you suggested chocolate would be a good option too,but no teddy bear!! x

I'd go with the teddy bear and chocolates (scarves and perfume are too personal for a girl he just met - ESPECIALLY perfume, since women are generally pretty particular about what fragrance they use)

Simple is a good start in my opinion. Flowers and a box of chocs is what I do. Everytime I go over the top it back fired.

I think the teddy is a bit much for a first date. Personally, I would be a bit taken aback with this present. I think a nice small bunch of flowers.
My partner gave me a present on our 2nd date, and I got a little freaked out........ but what he gave me was the most thoughtful gift anyone could have given me. On our 1st date, I mentioned that I hadn't spoken to my brother in ages, and I was running out of credit. So on our 2nd date he gave me 2 calling cards so I could ring him! That really proved to me that he was listening to me and not just in it for a shag or anything.
so maybe your colleague knows something about this girl that he might be able to buy her, to show her that he is really listening to her & keen on her.
Good luck to him.
