Either he likes being a couch-potato or he has some issues to solve. This guy might have a history of work-related problems. He can't keep on living life hiding from a new job, afraid that he might end up with the same problems as he did in his last job. It could also mean that he isn't ready for the job-life yet, is he still studying?

I don't give a crap how depressed that lazy sniveling snot monster is. He needs to be a man and go out and get a stinking job! If he doesn't you need to kick him out into the street with the rest of the rats and let him rot in the gutter. Pathetic urchins like this have no place in society as they do nothing but drain folks that actually work for a living.

it could be either really,,many people out of work find themselves in a slump,,they cant find work to begin with and may get help from the government or similar to allow them an income which can increase feelings of depression,,the longer they dont work the harder it is to find a job and they get used to being supported,,to then take on the responsibility of supporting yourself and losing your 'safety net' can be scarier than searching for work in the first place,,many people find it easier just not to try.THEN AGAIN,,if he hasnt had a job in a while, and has shown absolutely no signs of wanting to improve on his life ,he may not want to work,,,,some people are just like this unfortunately.given the chance,,many find the thought scarier than the actual working and once they do find a job it will improve self esteem no end, giving them a purpose and money they didnt have before. try to convince him that finding work would give him so much more than money,,there is a reason some people work any job rather than claim support from others even if the money is not much better,,self worth and knowing you support you and yours.

this is not laziness,he is sounding assured of a comfortable future, and if you are his assurance...i must say you need to be very sure about your relation with that kinda guy!
i feel if he is depressed he'll seek help and not say no to a job....for a job will not only help him financially but shall also give him a break from the causes that got depression in his life.
so be very sure, before you decide it to be plain "laziness".
good luck!

wow! seems this is a hot topic. you say he doesn't WANT to get a job. does he WANT to have a place to live, clothes to wear, a car to drive, food to eat? these are common things that will motivate a person to get a job. if these things are being provided for said person then why in hell WOULD said person get a job? i know i wouldn't get a job if i had someone nice to take care of me. most of the united states is on some kind of anti-depressant (lord knows, we need it), and yet they manage to get up every day and go to work. makes you think, huh?

I think men should always work unless they are dying lol jk but I think men have and will always be more of the worker then most woman. If he isnt working, that cannot be good for his man hood which is prob now depressing him. I am sure he knows he is a slacker. He is just waiting to see if you will put up with it

It means you're dating my ex-boyfriend!
He's an alcoholic and I felt he was depressed.
A family doctor could put him on mood meds if he is depressed. I take Welburtin and I get along so much better with everyone. My boss says my behavior at work is soooo much better, he wants a bucket full of medication. He didn't say if he would take it or what!

That he's a waster or wishes to shun the traditional roles in life that society expects of his. Maybe he's an artist and has no concept of the importance of money.
