most vets and breeders that i have spoken with say to wait until the second heat cycle. this is usually around 14 to 20 months

It needs to be at least 2 years old, have passed all health testing (not just simple vet exams), have an impeccible pedigree, a nice even temperament and have either been shown or evaluated to see if it meets breed standard and is breeding worthy.

A dog male or female should never be bred under 2 especially if large or giant breeds, they are neither physically or mentally ready. Also most health testing can't be done under 2 years of age.

I would wait until at least 16 as that is the age of consent. LOL.

But seriously, she needs to be at least 2, older if she is a larger breed.

The answerer who stated that larger breeds can be safely bred at 6 months is sadly mistaken. Many large breeds are not fully grown at 1 year of age, never mind 6 months.

I'd say at least 2 years. It's also important that the dog is current on vaccinations, current on heartworm prevention and in general good health.

If you thinking of breeding your dog, please research the possible problems/complications you could encounter and the expenses involed with them. Too many people seem to think of breeding their dog as a way to make some quick cash and are caught off guard when the dog experiences problems that end up costing them a lot of money, instead.

Regardless of how we feel about dogs producing too many pups here is the answer to your question.

Larger breeds are ready at 6 months for males, after her second bleeding for females.

Smaller dogs may take a longer time.

Males should be smaller than the female so that her pups will not cause her difficulty when whelping.

But you must take responsibility for pups that you breed. Shelters are overrun as it is. So consider very carefully before breeding your dog.

Males 18 months, and felmales the 'heat' following her second birthday..Unless she is a large, slow maturing breed, and then it would be 3 years old.

i dont believe in breeding dogs, there are many, many unwanted, lost and euthinized animals every year. would you like to be made to have babies as often as you could, but to answer your question, they usually come in heat at about 6 months
