Squid is far easier to clean than whole fish. Since you said "a" squid. I assume it's a good sized one at least 8 oz or so cause they range from 2 oz to a few lbs each. The steps are as follows.

Separate the head from the tentacles by pulling them apart. The tentacles might draw out the inards and sometimes the entire content from inside the head. If not, reach in with your finger to clear everything out from inside the head. Remove the pink membrane from the outside and rinse the whole head inside and out. You should be left with a nice pocket of solid white meat. How to cook this part depends on the thickness of the meat.

If it's a bigger squid with the meat thicker than 1/4", you would want to cut it into smaller piece for stir fry. Otherwise, you can either cut it into rings, batter and deep fry. Or you can stuff the entire pocket with rice or dressing and baise it.

The tentacles are edible and prefered by the asians. Feel with your hand to locate the beak. Remove it along with the eyes and the rest is edible meat. Batter and deep fry the smaller ones or stir fry the bigger ones.

You can use squid meat anywhere you use shrimp or prawns. ***Just don't overcook or else they get real tough. Bon Appetite.

You can use the tenticals, if you like. I think I've only had them breaded and deep fried. The body portion should look something like a long hollow tube. You can either slice that into rings or slice along the tube, so it unfolds into a nice big steak. You can prepare the rings anyway you like. If you make a steak, pound it out with a meat tenderizer, lightly dust with flour, and saute.

you must repeatedly whack it onto concrete or a rock.
that tenderizes the flesh and also breaks up the only hard part of a squid .. the beak.
it is necessary to remove the beak before cooking.

Really, the best advice I can give you is either don't buy something you aren't sure how to prepare until you research it-or ask the fishmonger at the time of purchase if you can't resist.
My fishmonger does all the tedious bits for me, so I can just take home, prepare and eat!
