Right, the "slant range" becomes important as you get closer to the ground transmitter. Imagine you're one mile from the transmitter and at 5,280 feet AGL (also one mile). The slant range is the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by the transmitter, your plane and the spot on the ground UNDER the plane. That's about 1.4 miles!
If you're farther away, though, the difference between the slant distance and the ground track difference becomes much less relevant, and can get down to where it's less than the expected error in the DME.
(THIS stuff is why kids should pay attention in geometry class; sometimes it really IS relevant)

The transmitter in the airplane sends a series of interrogation pulses to the DME ground station. The ground station sends back reply pulses. The aircraft system then determines how far the station is from the aircraft based on the difference of time it took from when the interrogation was transmitted to when the reply is received.
It uses the standard RADAR mile, 6.18 microseconds, to measure this delay. There is also a built in delay line in the receiver to compensate for time between when the ground station received the interrogation and replied, which is a known standard for the ground system. I think the delay is about 60 microseconds.
All of this takes place in approximately the 1 Gigahertz range.

Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) is part of the avionics panel in aircraft equipped to fly in Instrument conditions (IFR). It provides distance, ground speed, and time en route all useful information needed in navigating your aircraft. It also allows you to do certain lower approaches (landings) to airports so you can land in more inclement weather.
Hope this helps!

Since you asked the question in aircraft categories DME is Distance Measuring Equipment.IF want to know more about it go to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distance_Measuring_Equipment
IF you thing DME is something else like -Steve-o, mentioned, go to below mentioned page and type DME on left.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
Good luck.

It could also be the Designated Mechanic Examiner. People work on airplanes too, not just fly them... Mechanics get no respect
