They seem similar to those of us on the outside, but I think they are actually quite different. Halal involves a certain method of killing the animal while saying a dedication to Allah. The essence of Kosher meat preparation is that it can't come into contact with anything it isn't supposed to and all the blood has to be drained out.
The common ground is that pork is not Kosher or Halal.

similar, but not the same. In halal, you can mix cheese and meat (i.e. cheese burger) where as in kosher you can not. Also, wine is permitted in kosher but never in halal. when it come to slaughtering animals, the technique is similar and the name of God is mentioned at the time of slaughter.

If you follow a halal diet and can't find a halal store...then kosher will do just fine.

almost everything that is Kosher is Halal

but their are many things that are Halal and not Kosher by any standard.

Very close but kosher is much more strict.
