I think the biggest thing is it bothers other people. Health wise, I don't know. I've been cracking my knuckles for as long as I can remember, and I've never had any problems.

Cracking your knuckles is not as bad as people think. The usual argument is that knuckle popping causes arthritis. This does not happen. Chronic knuckle cracking may cause other types of damage, including stretching of the surrounding ligaments and a decrease in grip strength, but not arthritis.
What causes the popping sound is in the join when bubbles burst in the synovial fluid surrounding the joint.

Eventually it will lead to arthritis in your knuckles and I am living proof of that. But medical research doesn't always show this as a cause. Other than that...it is just annoying.

I read on MSN.com last week that there's nothing wrong with popping your knuckles...it's just air escaping. They're not sure what causes the strange noise, though.
