$6-8 thousand bikes are not common but they are not so exclusive anymore. Most bikes you see when you watch the Tour de France are in that range. Almost anybody's top line frame when you add some snazzy carbon Lightweight wheels and Dura Ace or Record will get you in that ballpark or more. If you want jewels adorning your bike (serious) with some silver and other precious metals, the guys at Columbine Bicycle Works can accomodate every whim and fancy with a corresponding $$$$$ price tag.

I've seen bikes that broke the $10k mark from Colnago, Passoni and Merckx. Some had some special anniversary Campagnolo components and gold plated stuff.
Here is something to astound you: $5,000 for a pair of bicycle wheels by Lew Racing coming out in December 2006.

It depends on the bike.
One-off bikes ridden by elite level pros such as Lance Armstrong are priceless. Before the 2004 Tour de France, Trek spent over $250,000 into R&D when designing Lance's new time trial bike with a narrower bottom bracket. Lance rode the bike once, decided it sucked, and never rode it again. That's $250,000 wasted.
For consumers, I've seen a Ferrari edition Colnago with a retail of $20,000 marked down to $15,000. It was such a good deal I thought about purchasing it.

the one most forgot about is BMC TT bike, starting price is around $13k US, fully set up for racing will raise the cost easily over $22k. Its a nice ride. Its also the only bike where they fly you in, set you up in a hotel, then do a complete measure on you and is built to your specs. Technically no two will be the same since each is made by hand. To view just google BMC bikes, or just go here. http://www.bmc-racing.com/time_machine+M5d637b1e38d.html
