There is so much debate on the correct age. Vets, world wide, are beginning to agree that by 3 months males and females can be desexed safely.
Actually the swing is for early de-sexing to stop unwanted behavior become habit, such as mounting in males.
Ask your vet for when they de-sex and stick with that.

Around 5-6 months. Before the hormones kick in. I recently had a male pup neutered at 4 1/2 months because he was already showing male behavior. Some vets even do it as early as 2 months.

If it is a male, my vet recommends calling for an appointment the first time he lifts his leg to pee, or at 6 months, whichver comes first..

For females, normally 6 months is recommended, but it may safely be done before.
