2. New "production" methods have led to increased "productivity".
An article only places emphasis on the noun that follows it. "the" places more direct emphasis than "a" or "an".
examples would be: door
the door (almost makes you visualize that someone is pointing at a particular door)
a door (you are discussing doors, but not anyone in particular).
"Production" is an active process. "Productive" is the ability of something to complete the process. "Productivity" is the result of the process.
