There IS supporting evidence that proves that is was indeed written at the time it should have been. Christians refuse to believe in anything to do with it, simply because it would shred a major part of the Christ myth. It's amazing - even with the knowlegde they have of how the bible was constructed, and even knowing that many books were taken out of the bible as being heresy, they refuse to admit it might possibly be true. Why is it so hard to believe? It was Judas' destiny to do it! And Jesus must have known that, too! If Judas was, as the text says, Jesus' favorite, and the one chosen, why is that bad? Jesus knew he had to die, he even knew where and how. All Judas did was help the prophecy be fulfilled. And to say his family wrote it to clear Judas' name is just stupid. Be open minded, people! You say you're enlightened by the Word - then you should be able to look at this with open minds.

It's a fascinating text that's very Gnostic in nature. It basically says that Judas was not a traitor but doing exactly what he was put on earth to do and it was Jesus wanted him to do. In order to understand it's full nature, you really need to understand a Gnostic perspective of the text.

I'd also add that it wasn't written by Judas (I contend that you can't be sure of who really wrote what - apocryphal or not!) but it does exist. It isn't in the Bible but it's still called a gospel. Look up the meaning of the word gospel and you'll find it doesn't mean, necessarily, that it was a book of the bible. It was a set of beliefs written in the early and attributed to the gnostics.

I can honestly say that I believe it just as much as I believe any of the other Gospels of the bible. Though I am more interested in it because it was left from the bible, I want to know what all the Gospels said, not just the ones that were chosen as "the best" sometimes the "lesser" stories are more interesting.

It was written over one hundred years after the death of Judas, and apparantly sets forth a story that differs from the one described by eyewitness accounts in the first century. So in a legal sense, wouldn't that be considered hearsay?

Is the true author known? If we can learn more about their personal convictions, that might explain a lot.

It's not Gospel, could be it was written by his family sometime later trying to restore the family name and to save face and honor after what Judas did.

Valuable insight to writing technique from those times and indication there were probably many more manuscripts which have become lost to history. Only the Gospel of St. Thomas predates it.

I can't wait until they get the trasnlation finished (or for that matter, get it transcribed and release it in the Greek, I'll hack through that)...I'm eager to read it. I find the preliminary bits very interesting...
