Denial (partly).
People are somewhat affected by far away events, but people deny that these bad things can happen to them, as these events happen a long distance away in a less civilized place, and not near them.
The dog dying is more immediate (close), and is harder to deny.
Somewhat related, is if an event (such as lung cancer as a result of smoking) is likely to happen in the future, we deny we are damaging ourselves by smoking, since there is a short term payoff, and the negative consequences are far in the future.

Sensitized....we can become Sensitized.
Great question.
If one person dies it is a tragedy.....If a Million die it becomes a statistic. Sad to say.
When the Tsunami hit Indonesia and the Far east, we all had to cope with hundreds of thousands of people being lost. Very difficult to comprehend that tragedy. Yet, when I saw a dying child on CNN, I cried many tears for that child. So, I was sensitized to the great loss. However, I felt the pain and the hurt of seeing a dying child.
Comes down to human nature, I suspect. We have difficulty comprehending many lost lives.
But, our Heart breaks seeing a family or a single child in terrible distress.
Do not despair, The Human race is alive and well;)

I think you might be looking for the word "association." That is, how close or far away you are from an object or situation. You might also be looking for either "link" or "connection." If you're talking about emotional connection, it's really more than one word. "Connections" is a good word that also indicates a level of friendship or affiliation.
