Or because they are a different religion than you are? Isn't the rating system supposed to be based on good/ bad question or answer?

It's supposed to be used to rate the quality of the question or the answer, but few people actually use it for its intended purpose. So if someone disagrees with the question or answer, or if they dislike the user, they'll just give them a thumbs down, regardless of the quality of the question or answer.

Yes, it is silly to give a thumbs down just because you disagree with the answer. I as a Christian have sometimes given a thumbs down to a Christian answer, because it was not an answer to the question, just a threat of hell.
However, it seems, from an added comment you make, that you also get involved in this silly little war of "thumbs down". If you object to the practise, and I agree with you in that, then it would be important that you set an example.

I give thumbs-downs only to bad answers. It just seems that the bad answers (resulting from ignorance, arrogance, etc.) do come from the same people. I guess you could say that I give people a thumbs-down because I dislike them, but only by proxy.

Bible-thumpers assume the own every button with a thumb on it. To me that makes sense.

I think a thumbs down means you don't agree with their answer...and a thumbs up means they nailed it.

I do it because people do it to me all the time, no matter what my answer is, good or bad. I'll admit I do it to people I don't like.
