That's a good question. It flips me out when my cats do that. Their senses are so acute that there's probably something there.

Most animals and especially those members of the feline family have the gift of ESP ( Extra Sensory Perception ) . In fact many animals sense things that humans cannot. You must have read reports of animals being able to sense natural disasters like flood / tsunami/ hurricanes/ earthquakes much before instruments made by humans can detect them.
It is commonly believed that cats and many other domestic animals can sense paranormal activity and 'see' things humans cannot.This belief was widely prevalent in Egypt and is still believed in many parts of the far east .
Also, don't ignore the cats senses if you see it alert. It will help you to take precautions against any possible danger threatening you.

all animals have a Sixth Sense.but they say that cat's are the ones who really see things.if you really wanna find out why they sit and stare go to your video store and get the movie Cats-A&E.cats go backover 10,000 years so their is alot of history about them and alot of myths.my grandma used to say that when you see a cat chaseing something but you can't see it,there chasing after a pixy.check it out,you'll find some things about cats very intresting.

I think two differen't things , one they are thinking , and they see something . And yes I think they can see somethingh that humens cant see.
