I myself think they are looking at dust motes or something in the air that is very small. They also have good night vision, so they may be seeing something that might only show up on infrared. Then again, my cats are pretty smart; they just may be thinking very hard- who knows?

No, they are just waiting for movement...potential prey moving due to the stillness..or having an "out of body" rendevous with the hot siamese nxt door..

I think they can see something that humens cant do . And I think when they stare off like that , I really think they are thinking .
