I don't know much about painting, so last year I painted over a door without using primer. Now the new coat of paint comes off if it's bumped or scratched - so the door looks terrible. I think the original coat was glossy latex paint, and the paint I used was flat latex. Is there a way I can paint over it, or do I have to do the laborious job of removing the previous layers of paint?

Painting over this problem will only cause the problem to reoccur.

You could sand the paint off, but it may take awhile. I would suggest buying a paint stripper, this takes way less time.

And remeber to use a good primer base in the future. I had to learn the hard way too.

The paint on that door was oil base, an you used latex paint, To get a really good job you will need to take some lacquer thinner an rub the door down the get sandpaper an sand the door down, take a clean cloth rub the sand off an then start with a primer an prime the door, then paint the door

Went thru the same thing. After a trillion tries I found the easiest way to deal with this is to apply a heavy coat of paint remover. Use a paint scraper and remove what paint will come off using the remover. Then use a hand sander, use fine sand paper and sand the rest of it off. The sander will remove all the paint that didn't come off from the paint remover. Then start the job over correctly using the appropriate primer and then your paint.

You put latex over oil not latex over latex. You can put flat over semi gloss as long as they are both latex. You are going to have to scrape the door real good, then sand it.Next a coat of Primer, lightly sand again. Then paint your top coat with oil or latex what ever you prefer.l,

Primer covers a multitude of sin, but, not this. Buy some stuff called Krudd Kutter at Lowes, or K-mart. It will take latex paint off.
