Apologies are always a good thing as long as they are sincere and heartfelt. I can't say as though they will welcome you with open arms, but it can be good for you to heal after a tragedy...I am assuming it was an accident.

Hopefully it was an accident. If you do write an apology letter, keep it short and heartfelt and DON'T say, "I know how you feel" or "your father was a good man" (as if you knew him). Just say it was an accident, that it haunts you, that you are very, very sorry for what happened and for their loss. Also don't admit fault or take blame if it was an accident, especially if they could sue you.

Send one to the DA if you killed someone, and ask him to forward it at a time when the family feels like facing it. The family does not want to hear from you.

It's an apology best from your heart to Gods ear. Or if the family contacted you, then yes, I would tell them of my remorse.
